Our Roots
Carolina Farmstead is a boutique woodworking studio located on a picturesque family farm in rural Eastern North Carolina. We specialize in farmhouse-style reclaimed wood furniture made with materials salvaged from our local area. Each piece is heirloom quality made to last for generations and is finished with GREENGUARD-certified environmentally friendly products. Our work has been seen nationally on HGTV's Love It or List It and in the PBS documentary and cooking series A Chef's Life. We pride ourselves on taking excellent care of customers and have been awarded Best of Houzz in the service category two years in a row. We're humbled and honored to consistently receive glowing 5-star reviews from the customers who have purchased from us.
Our History - tragedy into triumph
Our business was founded by Noble family patriarch Wayne as a way to get his sons working again after a devastating car accident during their college years left one in a wheelchair and the other with traumatic brain injury. Justin's physical needs as a paraplegic suddenly made it difficult for him to hold down a regular job or attend law school like he had planned, while Matt's emotional and cognitive needs placed him at a similar disadvantage in the workforce. Doctors noted how remarkable it was that one brother kept a keen intellect while the other kept a strong and fit body. Justin and Matt vowed to work together in life and in business in order to survive-- and thrive!-- as the ultimate team.
Wayne's Inspiration
While not officially founded until 2012, Carolina Farmstead can trace its origins back to 2001 when Wayne saw an old farmhouse being demolished and noticed that it was being deconstructed board by board. He learned that the wood was being reclaimed for re-use as flooring and immediately saw a way to combine his passion for wood and history with his background in manufacturing. He spent more than a decade at the helm of a reclaimed wood flooring business before shifting focus to furniture and a shared venture with his sons.
Our Process
Today, most furniture is mass produced. This move toward mass production has made it nearly impossible to find furniture that meets all of your needs in terms of durability and aesthetic appeal. As a boutique woodworking shop, Carolina Farmstead is perfectly positioned to build heirloom quality pieces one board at a time. Go ahead and use it, beat it up, admire how it ages over time, and then pass it on to the next generation.
